Whyalla Maritime Museum

Whyalla Maritime Museum specialises in naval, BHP shipbuilding, maritime and natural history of the upper Spencer Gulf. Its prime exhibit, HMAS Whyalla, the first modern warship built in 1941 in South Australia stands on dry land, two kilometres from the sea. The collection documents the areas diverse marine habitats including sharks, stingrays, seahorses, sea dragons, blue ring octopuses and more. Plus the 1814 edition of Matthew Flinders journals and collections of items recovered from shipwrecks. Singing to the Sharks exhibition documents the indigenous Aboriginal people of the area and their connection with the sea. Admission includes guided tour of HMAS Whyalla at 11.30am and 1.30pm daily. Freycinet Trail

The Freycinet Trail extends 12 kilometres along the coastline of Fitzgerald Bay in the Upper Spencer Gulf. Beginning at the northern end of Fitzgerald Bay it follows the coastline to the southern tip of the bay at Point Lowly. The trail consisting of hiking, cycling and driving components and is sign posted with trail markers and interpretive signage. The Fitzgerald Bay hiking trail is four kilometres long offering a leisurely walk along dunes, pebble beaches and bushland. There are access roads to start of this hiking only trail. Trail is clearly defined and hikers are requested to stay on the trail. The remainder of the trail is suitable for hiking, cycling or driving. It follows the coastal emergency route with spectacular ocean views comparable to Victoria's Great Ocean Road.
