Wines that delight the palate and inspire the imagination, crafted from hand-picked fruit on vines nurtured carefully to produce a limited yield of the finest berries. A visit to Savina Lane's cellar door is more than a wine tasting, it is a wine experience. Visitors can explore the vineyard on a self-guided walk with interpretative panels for each of the varieties. At Savina Lane they not only produce double-trophy gold award-winning Shiraz from 40-year-old dry-grown vines, they are also part of the region's Strange Bird alternative wine trail, with Fiano and Montepulciano from Italy, Tempranillo and Graciano from Spain and Petit Manseng and Viognier from France. They work closely throughout the winemaking process with renowned winemaker Mike Hayes of Symphony Hill, who shares their belief that the best wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. They focus on environmentally-sustainable viticulture, combining modern vineyard management with respect for tradition and prefer to use natural fertilisers and compounds for crop protection. Their wines are stored in an underground wine cellar excavated from solid granite. Their new cellar door is open from Wednesday to Saturday and most public holiday weekends from 10am to 5pm. The Granite Belt town of Glen Aplin, south of Stanthorpe on the New England Highway, is famous for its fruit orchards and wineries. If you are in the area in the right season you will be able to savour the taste of fresh stone-fruits (November to March) and berries (November to early March). You'll find gourmet jams, sauces and liqueurs year-round. The Southern Downs village of Severnlea, on the highway south of Stanthorpe hasn't changed that much since it was first settled. There is still fruit growing and topaz fossicking, but these days you'll also discover some very good wineries.
