Visit one of Australia's most famous gardens featuring world famous wisteria, plus rhododendrons, azaleas and maples. Nooroo was built and planted in 1880 by William Hay and original plantings include English oaks, chestnuts, ash and cedars which are underplanted with thousands of bulbs including, bluebells, daffodils and crocus. Famous for its wisteria collection, hostas, lilly of the valley and Japanese iris have been planted to complement the wisteria. Nooroo also has many rare maples, azaleas and rhododendrons. In April and May, the garden has wonderful autumn colour. Many of the shrubs and maples have been underplanted with white nerines which creates a stunning display. The colours are at their best in the ten days after 25 April. Situated off the Bells Line of Road just past Mount Banks there is a turnoff to Pierces Pass. The left hand track goes to Walls' Lookout car park and it is a 30 minute walk to the lookout of the Grose Gorge and Walls. The road to the right goes to another car park where there is a choice of two walks, one to Rigby Hill and the other to Pierces Pass and the Blue Gum Forest. It is advisable to plan your walks in advance by seeking advice from the National Parks Heritage Centre and carry a map. ...

Mount Wilson and Mount Irvine

Mount Wilson is a heritage garden village only two hours from Sydney. The area has magnificent bushland and rainforest, walks and canyons as well as historic houses and grand exotic gardens, some of which are open to the public. Mount Irvine is about 15 minutes further drive. It has a rural mountain setting of farms and fine gardens, with magnificent views over the mountains. There are public toilets at Silva Plana (as you enter Mount Wilson), the Fire Station, Founders Corner, Waterfall Reserve and Cathedral Reserve. Barbecue facilities are available at Cathedral Reserve, however, please bring your own drinking water as the villages use tank water. There are many pleasant strolls around the villages. If you attempt a more ambitious walk in the National Park, please be aware that weather conditions can change rapidly. EPIRB or similar equipment is also strongly recommended. The village of Mount Tomah is located approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Richmond, on the Bells Line of Road. The peak of Mount Tomah is 1,016 metres (3,333 feet) above sea level. Its most distinguished feature, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, is located on the north side of that road. The garden was established in 1972. Entry into the garden is free. Sandstone woodlands and gullies rest upon a basalt cap making it possible to grow cool climate plants from around the world. The World Heritage Exhibition Centre is in Mount Tomah and allows visitors to engage in a virtual journey through the canyons and ridges of 1,000,000 hectares of wilderness....
