Lockyers Road Walking Track

Lockyers Road Walking Track is one of the most historic walking tracks in the Blue Mountains. The track is one of the original 'roads' used to descend into Hartley Vale. Hand built by convicts, remnants of their handiwork can still be seen all along the track. The track has beautiful views over the Hartley Valley, and spectacular birdlife.

Mitchells Ridge Lookout

Mitchells Ridge Lookout is an historic lookout and rest area, named after Sir Thomas Mitchell who supervised the building of the Pass by convict labour in 1832. An obelisk at the lookout commemorates the opening of Victoria Pass in 1832. The Pass is one of the oldest and most significant engineered works in Australia still in use today. From the western end of the lookout there is a good view of the convict hewn and built sandstone rampart across the Pass.

Mount Victoria and District Historical Society Museum

The Mount Victoria and District Historical Society Museum has sixteen rooms, large and small, housing an amazing collection of artefacts from Australia and exotic shores beyond. From prehistoric times through to early exploration, convict days to more recent times the collection is multifaceted.

Early farming tools and dairy utensils, natural history, laundry and kitchenware, the local mining industry, early photographic equipment and musical instruments. Furniture and fashion are also on view, The Railway Refreshment Room tableware is on display, as well as a schoolroom and clothing from the 19th century.

Don't miss the technology room nor the Papua New Guinean dioramas. Dioramas and many amazing natural history items were bequeathed to the Society by Mel Ward (Charles Melbourne Ward) actor, naturalist and marine collector, 1903-1966. His Gallery of Natural History and Native Art was based in a long, narrow fibro building at the Hydro Majestic Hotel, Medlow Bath.

Local history publications and souvenirs are available for purchase. The grand 1858 sandstone railway station (still in use), in which the collection is housed, is in itself worth a visit, as a reminder of the days of steam train travel.

There is something of interest for everyone.

Mount Piddington Lookout

Mount Piddington is a mountain in the Blue Mountains village of Mount Victoria. It has a lookout, restrooms and a picnic area at its summit, surrounded by a loop road, Mount Piddington Road, which runs from the summit to Mount Victoria village. It is also the starting point of several bushwalking tracks that descend to the cliffs of Hornes Point and the Fairy Bower reserve. Notable sites on the slopes of Mount Piddington include Coxs Leap and Bushranger Cave. Views of the Kanimbla Valley are possible from the lookout, although trees are present and it is not entirely clear. The mountain is mostly covered in bushland of the Eucalypt variety and adjoins One Tree Hill (1,111 metres) the highest point in the Blue Mountains Plateau.

Mount Blackheath Lookout

Travel along Shipley Plateau through a mix of bush (spot the waratahs in Spring), small farms and orchards - at the end you will reach Mount Blackheath Lookout with views to the north and west to the Great Dividing Range over the Kanimbla Valley. At 1,076 metres it is the perfect place to relax and watch the sun go down after a strenuous bike ride or when the weather is right you might be fortunate to see colourful hang gliders and parasails riding the thermals after launching from this popular site. There are dirt sections along Shipley Plateau.

Hargraves Lookout

A pleasant drive to the western end of Shipley Plateau passing local apple orchards will bring you to Hargraves Lookout and provide magnificent views over the rural Megalong Valley. At the very end of Shipley Plateau is Mount Blackheath, a popular hang-gliding site from a purpose built ram near the lookout at 1076 metres. If the conditions are right gliders soar over the Kanimbla Valley and sometimes can reach Bathurst.

Centennial Glen

End of Bundarra Street and follow the dirt road west, Blackheath NSW 2785

Just one kilometre west of Blackheath, Centennial Glen is a cool Glen with small waterfalls, ferns and impressive sandstone overhangs and provides excellent views of Kanimbla Valley. The Glen is also a popular site for rock climbers. The Centennial Glen/Porters Pass circuit walk takes about three hours, and has some steep sections and can be damp underfoot so care should be taken.

Campbell Rhododendron Gardens

The purpose of the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens is to conserve the natural features of the area for the pleasure of visitors and encourage tourists to enjoy the beauty of the garden. The garden of 18 hectares contains azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, maples, spring bulbs, towering trees both native and exotic, and a lake. Picnic areas are available. A feature of the garden is the beautiful natural fern glades and the abundance of native flora. Membership subscriptions and donations help towards the upkeep of the garden. The Blue Mountains Rhododendron Society is a volunteer organisation which manages the Gardens and does all of its own fundraising. The Lodge in the Gardens is open during the peak flowering season from the beginning of October to the first week of November for the best Devonshire Teas in the Blue Mountains.

This Greater Blue Mountains Drive Discovery Trail explores five routes radiating out like the spokes of a wheel, each an out-and-back drive and can be done in any order from the charming mountain village of Blackheath. Offering a journey across plateau and valley environments, this Discovery Trail includes a wide selection of lookouts, picnic sites and walks. Highlights of the Trail include Pulpit Rock, Govetts Leap, Evans Lookout, all with unsurpassed yet different views of the Grose Valley, home of the Blue Gum Forest; the rural Megalong Valley and Shipley Plateau. Starting and returning to Blackheath this 92 kilometre trail will take two to three hours to drive, plus stops. It includes suburban streets, narrow sealed and sometimes windy and unsealed roads. Stop at the National Parks Blue Mountains Heritage Centre and learn more about the area through interactive displays and free film screenings in the theatrette.

Anvil Rock

Located at the end of Hat Hill Road in the Grose Valley, this weathered sandstone rock formation offers magnificent views over the Grose Valley to Mount Banks and Mount Hay. The Lookout gets it's name from an anvil that was placed on the lookout in 1940. A wind eroded cave is just 400 metres to the west. Dirt road access for two kilometres. It is a ten minute walk from the carpark and Hat Hill Road has approximately eight kilometres of dirt access - however the view is well worth it.

Blue Gum Forest

Six different ways in and out - all of them strenuous - lead to this fabled forest deep in the Grose Valley. The area was set aside for conservation some 20 years before the Blue Mountains National Park was created. The walk however is well worth the effort for the more experienced walker and you should take some time to rest and gaze up at the massive trees, set among a grass and fern understorey. As it is a five hours walk each way you may chose to camp overnight at nearby Acacia Flat (about 500 metres to the right). Camping is not permitted in Blue Gum Forest.

The two bedroom cabins each have one double bedded room, with two or three single beds in the other bedroom. The four bedroom cabins have two double bedrooms, plus one bedroom with two single beds and another with either three or four single beds. Each neat cabin has a cosy, wood burning slow combustion heater together with natural gas heating. All cabins have television and a clean, self-contained kitchen with electric stove and fridge. All crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils are provided to cater for those hearty mountain appetites. Blankets, doonas, pillows are all supplied. Please note that linen is not included. You must bring your own sheets, towels and pillowcases....

Grand Canyon Track

Arresting sandstone walls, ever-present waterfalls and abundant native plants line the awesome Grand Canyon track near Blackheath in the Blue Mountains. The historic loop track takes you into the heart of this World Heritage-listed landscape. It's an intimate and adventurous track which walkers have trodden since 1907. Setting out from Evans lookout, the well-shaded track meanders through luscious native vegetation of ferns and golden wattles, and remains close to Greaves Creek, all of which combine to make this a particularly good walk for the summer months. Shorten the loop by leaving a second car at the Evans Lookout Road entrance or spend the day and stop for lunch at the nearby picnic area before returning to the lookout. Although there are loads of semi-ledges which make up this challenging walk, you don’t need specialist hiking or abseiling equipment, so comfortable walking shoes are all you’ll need to get out there and explore. Mount Piddington Lookout

Mount Piddington is a mountain in the Blue Mountains village of Mount Victoria. It has a lookout, restrooms and a picnic area at its summit, surrounded by a loop road, Mount Piddington Road, which runs from the summit to Mount Victoria village. It is also the starting point of several bushwalking tracks that descend to the cliffs of Hornes Point and the Fairy Bower reserve. Notable sites on the slopes of Mount Piddington include Coxs Leap and Bushranger Cave. Views of the Kanimbla Valley are possible from the lookout, although trees are present and it is not entirely clear. The mountain is mostly covered in bushland of the Eucalypt variety and adjoins One Tree Hill (1,111 metres) the highest point in the Blue Mountains Plateau...
